A POLISH SAILOR
A traveler
an English writer

Joseph Conrad is considered one of the leading English authors of the '800 and 900. His are stories of the sea and of adventure: stories of men who live on the waves, and dragged dragging vessels facing the extraordinary solitude of the waters, treacherous, infinite, World Eaters, travelers in the throes of constant risk.

In fact, before a novelist, Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski was truly a man of the sea: lost his mother and his father imprisoned for political reasons (the family was originally from a part of Poland annexed by Russia), grew up in the dream of sailing the seas in freedom and away from land that had brought him from childhood, so pain.
Although born in Poland (a Berdicev on December 3, 1857), is actually considered a British writer, in 1886 it became a British citizen.

Only seventeen years, driven by an irresistible vocation for the life of the sea, to Marseilles, where he embarked as a simple sailor. Surfing means for him to know especially the world sailor who was identified in trafficking, smuggling, men who took the boat to escape who knows what fate.
For twenty years traveling to almost all the seas, especially in the Malay Archipelago, and in the French merchant navy in the UK, where it reaches the degree of Master Mariner.

more unique than rare, Conrad became a master of literature, writing in a language, English, not his, learned he was already a grown man. Basic theme is the loneliness of the individual, at the mercy of the blind shots of the case in the sea is often chosen as a symbol. The lone hero of Joseph Conrad is almost always a fugitive and an outcast, marked by misfortune or remorse, struggling stoically facing the trials that fate has reserved.

Comparing the works of Conrad is still admired, but also a bit 'baffled by the extraordinary variety of creative writer, an elusive narrator, who, however, gives the impression of a continuous writing spiritual autobiography.
Unrepeatable sondatore as few of the human soul, Joseph Conrad died of a heart attack August 3, 1924.

I chose some highlights: *
Almayer's Folly (Almayer's Folly) 1895
Almayer, a Dutchman who has had a life of petty failures and infamy, is the only European in a remote village in Borneo, only among people who do not understand this, and he can not understand.
* The Nigger of the "Narcissus" (The Nigger of the "Narcissus") 1897
A crew, an all-male world, a great film: the sea.
* Heart of Darkness (Heart Of Darkness) 1899
It 'a short story of about 150 pages, tells the era of colonialism in the Congo and the lust for wealth (in this case, ivory) that corrodes the 'man.
* Lord Jim (Lord Jim) 1900
Lord Jim is a great book, large in size but also unique in being able to take the reader chained to the story of a soul. The theme of escape from the shadow of fierce conscience. Film 1965 with the same name Peter O'Toole
* Typhoon (Typhoon and Two Other Stories) 1902
"he had encountered a storm, of course. He was soaked to the bone, beaten, tormented ... But he had never caught a glimpse of immeasurable strength and excessive anger, anger that goes and never runs out of place - the wrath and fury of the angry sea.
* Nostromo (Nostromo: A Tale of Seaboard) 1904
The heroic exploits of an Italian port in a South American republic, including adventure and fierce jealousy of a woman who takes him to death.
* The Secret Agent (The Secret Agent: A Simple Tale) 1907
Among the first books deal with topics such as espionage or terrorism, but Conrad's aversion to the revolutionary ideas which deny individual freedom.
* Victoria - a history of the islands (Victory) 1915
A novel of adventure and fate in the South Seas, who is also a subtle investigation into the violence and the ambiguity of the secret love affair. Novel by an inescapable destiny has the appearance of the adventure story with strong colors, but it's also a subtle psychological research on emotions.
* The shadow line (The Shadow Line) 1917
experience, fundamental to the life of every human being, as the passage from youth to age adult has been told many times over time and in many ways. Conrad literature gives the "form" to tell exactly what we are, the nature of our ambitions and our emotions. The story has great evocative ("recognizing the footsteps of those who came before you go ahead. Until we see before us a shadow line [...]»).
